Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Trina Allen Abstract: This fun science experience integrates writing, math, and science in a four-stage process. Students work in teams of two or three learners using peer interaction and writing to understand the concept. Keywords: freshwater, saltwater, groundwater, water distribution, water conservation, water supply, glacier water consumption, direct water consumption Lesson Plan Grade Level: fifth through ninth grade Total Time Required for Lesson: 60 minutes To the Teacher: This activity is a simulation of earths water distribution. Students will see the amount of fresh water compared to saltwater. This activity should follow a background lesson on water conservation or water supply and distribution for your local area. Four-Stage Process: 1- Background Activity- completed prior to doing the activity 2- PreLab: questions to answer before doing the activity 3- InLab: completing the activity 4- PostLab: writing a lab report to promote scientific reasoning Suggested Links for background activities: The Groundwater Foundation Kids Corner. http://www.groundwater.org/kc/kc.html NASA earth observatory, The Water Cycle. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Library/Water/ USGS, The water cycle: Water storage in ice and snow. http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/watercycleice.html Sustainable Forestry, “Earth Water Distribution and Water Consumption.” http://sftrc.cas.psu.edu/LessonPlans/Water/earthWater.html United Nations Environmental Programme, Freshwater issues. http://www.unep.or.jp/ietc/Issues/Freshwater.asp#index _________________________________________________________________________ Water Distribution Activity _________________________________________________________________________ Stage One: Background Background Concepts: Water is the only known substance that exists naturally as a solid, liquid and gas on the earths surface. Almost 97% of the earths water is too salty to drink. Most of the fresh water is in glaciers and ice caps. Less than 1% of the earths water is available for our use. We must conserve the water available to us. Ground water flows underground through the soil and rocks. Ground water supplies wells and springs. Surface water is above ground in lakes, swamps, rivers and ground ice. EARTHS WATER Saltwater: Oceans, seas, and bays 96.5% Freshwater: 3.5% Icecaps, glaciers and permanent snow 1.74% Ground water 1.7 0% Lakes 0.013% Swamp water and rivers 0.001% Soil moisture and atmosphere 0.002% Ground Ice 0.022% Other 0.022% _________________________________________________________________________ Stage Two: PreLab Answer questions before completing the activity 1. Carefully read the directions for the activity. Read everything. Dont just skim it. 2. Write at least one question you have about the activity. 3. Brainstorm everything that you know about water distribution. Write as much as you can. Dont be concerned about spelling or editing. 4. What is the overall purpose of the activity? Write one sentence describing how what you are being asked to do today will help you learn about water distribution. What will completing this activity teach you about water supply and distribution? _________________________________________________________________________ Stage Three: InLab Complete during the activity Materials: 1000 mL beaker 100 mL graduated cylinder 6 small jars Food coloring Eyedropper Seven 3 X 5 cards Procedure: Check off each step after you complete it. ____ 1. Fill the 1000 mL beaker with tap water. The full beaker represents all of earths water. ____ 2. Pour 35 mL of water from the beaker into the 100 mL graduated cylinder. The 35 mL represents all of earths fresh water. The 965 mL left in the beaker represents the saltwater in the oceans. ____ 3. Add a few drops of food coloring to both beakers. Make saltwater and fresh water different colors. ____ 4. Divide the 35 mL of fresh water by pouring it into the smaller jars. ____A. Pour 174 mL into the first jar. This represents the fresh water in glaciers and icecaps. ____B. Pour 170 mL into the second jar to represent groundwater. ____C. Pour 13 mL into the third jar to represent water in lakes. ____D. Place 1 drops into the fourth jar to represent water in rivers and swamps. ____E. Place 2 drops into the fifth jar to represent the water in the atmosphere and soil. ____F. Pour 22 mL into the sixth jar to represent ground ice. ____ 5. Label a 3 x 5 card with: A. glaciers and icecaps B. underground C. lakes D. rivers and swamps E. atmosphere and soil F. ground ice G. saltwater ____ 6. Place each 3 x 5 card you made in front of the jar or beaker it goes with. Draw a picture of your jars and beaker under observations. ____ 7. Use your results to answer these questions. 1. Where is most of earths water? 2. Where is most of earths fresh water? _________________________________________________________________________ Stage Four: PostLab Write a lab report You will begin by describing in writing the materials and methods you used and then your results. You will write a summarizing paragraph. Section One Materials and Methods: Describing the procedure Write one paragraph describing the procedure you followed during this activity. Make sure to use enough detail about your materials and methods that someone else could repeat your procedure. Hint: Refer to your PreLab, this handout, background materials, the textbook and any notes you took during the activity. Section Two Results: Making sense of your data for yourself and others Step 1: Review all the data from your experiment. Summarize the main finding of the activity in one sentence. Step 2: Conclusions Answer the questions in complete sentences.1. Should cities near the ocean use the water from the ocean for household and industry? Explain your answer. 2. Should saltwater be treated to remove the salt and then used as fresh water? 3. Is water in icecaps and glaciers accessible to humans? Why or why not? 4. How can we conserve our fresh water? Section Three Discussion: Interpreting the results Step 1: Write a one-sentence statement of your conclusion(s) about the results. Step 2: Write a paragraph stating how the data from your activity should influence future decisions about water conservation, use and supply? Note: This activity incorporates the premise of the college LabWrite program developed by North Carolina State University: http://www.ncsu.edu/labwrite/ Trina Allen left a successful career as a middle school teacher to concentrate on her writing. Plea to Diehard Catholics & Protestants to Repent

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By David Ben-Ariel Having clearly seen how practicing homosexuality is a sin, I can now see clearly how SPIRITUAL HOMOSEXUALS, the bloody Roman Catholic whore and her Protestant prostitute daughters (Rev. 17:5), prefer their perverted and idolatrous, manmade doctrines, over the Word of God and his holy commandments (Mark 7:7). All those who refuse to FORSAKE BABYLON are proud and stubborn and many will die in their sins, suffering the seven last plagues, as is just (Rev. 18:4-5). Why are some in love with Roman wolves in sheep’s clothing, whom both the Bible and history testify against as whitewashed paganism, counterfeit Christianity? May we all learn to love the Lord God of the Bible, the King of all Creation, and learn to hate that which He hates: the ABOMINATION OF THE RCC. May we not resist this Light to return to traditional darkness (John 3:19-21), or we’ll fall for the pope’s tricks when he bewitches the masses with his sorcery and fights against true Christians - again! (2 Thess. 2:9-12). Don’t let yourself be given over to a reprobate mind. Let Christ renew your mind and wash it by the water of the Word that can cleanse you of all the unclean doctrines and pagan practices of the unholy RCC, so help us God (2 Cor. 6:17). For life-saving information on how to identify the true Church of God today mentioned in the holy Scriptures, revealed as following the example of Jesus and the early Church with their biblical practices (1 John 2:6), feel free to check out The Church Jesus Built and let the truth set you free! Yoga For Weight Loss - Losing Weight With Yoga

Monday, February 11th, 2008

By Julia Denham You’re many pounds overweight, and you’d love to try yoga… will yoga help you to lose weight? The main benefit of yoga is that anyone can do it: young, old, fit, or completely out of shape, so do try yoga - with your doctor’s permission, of course. Indeed, many yoga studios now provide classes with specially modified exercises for people who want to lose weight. Since hatha yoga isn’t strenuous, you’re not going to burn lots of calories with yoga, but what you will do is get back in touch with your body. Yoga Puts You Back In Touch With Your Body After a few sessions of yoga, many people find that their cravings for fatty and other “unhealthy” types of food go away, and they find themselves eating less, and wanting to eat more fruits and vegetables. This happens completely naturally, your diet will change of its own accord. Yoga has a normalizing effect on all the systems of your body. Your digestion will improve, and you may find that small niggling heath worries like a sore back, or sinusitis, clear up of their accord. You’ll also find that you will sleep better, and that you want to move more. Yoga Eases Stress, Eliminating Comfort Eating Yoga is particularly useful if you’re a comfort eater - someone who eats whenever they’re stressed. Your yoga exercises help you to calm down. This isn’t something that you will notice immediately, but over time you’ll find that you no longer react as you once did. You’ll get rid of your stashes of chocolate bars, because you no longer need them. So if you’ve been considering yoga, sign up for some classes. You’ll be amazed at the changes which yoga will bring into your life. You can lose weight and feel great with with yoga, a gentle form of exercise. Yoga strengthens both your body and mind, and is suitable for anyone, from children to seniors. The Case For Internships

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By Michael Levine America may be the Land of Opportunity, but this is also the land of the Big Trade-Off. Sure, you can have that nice house, but youre going to have to become a mortgage slave to keep it. You can drive that fancy sports car, but youll have to fork over an insurance premium as hefty as the GNP of some Third World nations. In the Bible it says, in life, if you want honey, you get bees with stingers. For anything worth having, theres price to pay. Its the same with a career. Most professional positions require experience, but in this classic Catch-22, how does a young college student or graduate gain that experience? Well, its just as Mark Twain said, Never let school interfere with our education. I believe the intern programs in place at companies like Coca-Cola, Proctor & Gamble, CBS, and mine provide the best chance for young people to enter and grow in many professions. Although the work is demanding, with little or no immediate financial return, interning is a textbook example of a win-win situation. When a young person comes to my public relations company and tells me hes willing to intern, a distinctly modern social contract is entered into. Though he is not a servant, and I am not a teacher, if he does some unpaid work, well do some teaching. The company gets the opportunity to observe eager and smart young people who energize the company. Like a farm team, interns are prospective employees, and we get to watch them in action. For the intern, the rewards are far greater. Firstly, most interns are college students, and nearly all receive valuable college credit for their services. Beyond that, interning teaches the neophyte how to function in a complex, real-life adult business environment. Mike Tyson could have studied boxing manuals his whole life, but he would never have become the Champ if he hadnt stepped into a real ring. No classroom can substitute for visceral, palpable learning in an authentic setting. Problem solving, initiative, creativity, and cooperation are well fostered as the intern struggles to carve a niche for him/herself. To make it as an intern, one must embody the qualities of any effective worker, and the rewards go far beyond the merely educational. Many interns go on to highly successful careers. Interning is practical. In an ever-tightening job market, it provides career preparation, enables a young professional to develop marketable skills and demonstrate potential to a prospective employee. But beyond the practicalities, theres a bigger picture that needs to be addressed. For too many, America has become the Land of the Freeloader and the Home of the Lazy. People seem to want it all, right here right now, with a minimum of effort. Dreams of winning this weeks Lotto game have supplanted that dream of building a life built of Freuds twin peaks, Lieben and Arbeiten, love and work. The old-fashioned work ethic is, if not dead, then surely on the critical list. America says it wants to be No. 1, but many refuse to expend the effort to get there. We can do it, but theres only one way, and thats simply to work for it, and work hard. For centuries, apprenticeship was the equivalent to todays technical college. The spirit of apprenticeship is still alive in interning. If Americas work force whined a little less, and had a little more of the initiative of my highly motivated interns, maybe this country could find a semblance of its former glory. Yes, they do not get paid. But as my interns have so brilliantly demonstrated, nobody works for free. Drink More Chamomile

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

By Kadence Buchanan Perhaps you recall chamomile from the times you were sick and your parent, friend, or partner, gave you a hot cup of this therapeutic drink to ease your suffering stomach. Chamomile in fact is known for centuries, as Romans used it daily while English have added it to their alternative “tea-breaks” to give them a positive spin. If you have not tried it during a cold winter night or you have not offered it in one of your gatherings, it is probably time to learn some things about this amazing infusion. Chamomile is actually a flower that comes from a herb named “Chamomilla.” Different areas around the globe cultivate chamomile and it is found in abundance in North America, temperate Asia and throughout the European continent. As the chamomile seeds need open soil to survive, it often grows near roads, around landfills and in cultivated fields as a weed. But, although everyone has heard of its existence and most of us have used for some reason or another, few actually know why chamomile has healing powers which can aid the human organism in regaining its health’s balance. The main feature of the chamomile flower is its natural oil extract, called chamazulene alpha-bisabol. This therapeutic oil has medical qualities that enrich the infusion one creates by boiling the chamomile flowers. Due to this oil, chamomile has become known as one of the best herbs one can use to sooth pain and relax. Matricaria recuitita, which is the scientific name of the German chamomile, is the one with the highest concentration of this special oil in its strains. In fact, most of your local store’s chamomile supplies come from this type of chamomile plant. Primarily used to heal stomach ache, like food or menstrual cramps, diarrhea, or other type of intestine pains, chamomile is kept in every kitchen cupboard as a natural healing medicine. Those who usually have to deal with stomach problems always keep a portion of chamomile in their house, while boiling water and adding chamomile has gained over the years a loyal audience all around the world. According to researchers, chamomile has been found to effectively treat sleep disorders, skin and eye problems, bad breath and other mouth health problems, mood disorders or even the flu. For example, doctors have been recommending chamomile to people that need to get rid of an eye irritation, by simply wetting with chamomile a cotton ball and placing it on top of the eyelid. Being the main ingredient in a variety of recipes, chamomile has advanced from a simple herbal tea to a metabolic aid as it actually helps reduce blemishes and heals other type of inflammatory skin conditions. In addition, frequent chamomile drinking is advisable as a natural soother when one experiences stomach pains caused by ulcer or some type of internal gastrointestinal tract. Since it is mild enough for everyday use, chamomile is actually one of the best choices one has to drink something that is both pleasing in the taste and has a healing potential at the same time. If you are not one of those chamomile allergy sufferers, you should definitely try drinking chamomile instead of tea or coffee. It is much healthier for your body and it can also be extremely invigorating. Negative Calorie Foods & Weight Loss

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By P. Mehta You gain weight when your calorie intake is more than your calorie expenditure. But if this calorie equation is reversed, then it results in “negative calorie” balance in your body. In this negative calorie case, you expand more calories than youtake in, resulting in a decrease in the stored calories in the formof body fat, and you experience a weight loss. About 10% of daily caloric intake is used to process foods in the body. You canexpand more by doing physical activities. There are certain foods that show negative calorie effect becausethe body has to expand more energy to extract calories from thesefoods. The negative calorie foods need more calories to break downthe foods and digest than the calories the foods actually contain. The extra calories are taken up from the stored fat in the body. Thusthe negative calorie foods (may also be called as minus calorie foodsor fat burning foods) are ideal for reducing the body fat and for losing weight. Let us take an example. A piece of dessert consisting of 300 calories may require only 150 calories to be digested by our body, resulting in a net gain of 150 calories which is added to our body fat! So if you eat100 calories of a food that requires 150 calories to digest, then you have burnt an additional 50 calories simply by eating that food. These 50 calories are used up from the stored fat in your body! These foods are widely available in nature. Some of the foods from the list of negative calorie foods (about 100 in number) are: asparagus, broccoli, beets, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, carrot, garlic, papaya, spinach, turnip, zucchini, apples, oranges, lettuce, grapefruit, pineapples, strawberries, and raspberries. It is a great idea to eat these negative calorie food items to your full satisfaction without counting calories. Include these foods in your daily diet and plan your diet according to food pyramid. You will be amazed to seethe fast weight loss results. You can follow negative calorie diet plan for safe and permanent weight loss. Searching For A Discount Mother Of The Bride Dress

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Abe Gardea You can look fabulous at your daughters wedding in a discount mother of the bride dress. Theres no need to spend a lot of money on an expensive dress if you dont have to. With a little time, consideration and effort spent on the shopping process, you can find a discount mother of the bride dress that will make you feel just as wonderful and accomplished as it will make you look. The quest for a discount mother of the bride dress that looks elegant and classy, not cheap, begins with the consideration of the type or style of dress you want to wear to your daughters wedding. Youll have a good idea of the degree of formality required by the dress your daughter chooses for herself. Youll want to match the feel of it, the degree of formality, tradition or casualness that her dress displays, as that will set the tone of the whole wedding ceremony. The general rule of thumb that youll want to bear in mind as you search for a discount mother of the bride dress of the best quality possible, it that your best bet will always be classic styles and lines. This is true for a variety of reasons. First, fads come and go very quickly. A discount mother of the bride dress from last season in a faddish style that was a delight last year could very well look tacky this year. It is not only the design or cut of a dress that can be faddish. Weve all seen color fads pass before our eyes. And, how could we ever forget the shoulder pad insanity weve witnessed periodically through the years? Second, there is a reason that classic looks and lines are classic. They got it right the first time. Its hard to improve on perfection. Classic styles may undergo slight changes through the years to update the general look, different types or sizes of buttons and other decorative details, but the basic line does not change substantially. That means that you can buy a discount mother of the bride dress in a classic style from last season or further back and it will still be fashionable today. You may choose to visit the fabric store and pick up a few notions, buttons, decorative edging and the like, and invest a bit of time in updating the details of your discount mother of the bride dress, bring it up to the very latest of fashion. However, in all probability, if you choose well, you may not even have to do that. Classic lines are meant to be able to be used again and again, which is why clothing of this sort is usually put together well, with quality materials, sturdy stitching and a special attention to stress points and details. A discount mother of the bride dress never has to look cheap. By taking your time and choosing well, you can find a classically beautiful dress that will make you look lovely and feel accomplished. Healthy Eating Tips When Eating Out

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Gary Gresham Healthy eating tips work very well when you are at home and can control how you prepare food. But what happens when you decide to eat out? If you are serious about eating healthy to lose weight, you can still go out to a restaurant and enjoy a nice meal. You just need to be aware of what is going to be offered and decide to make good choices. Remember, eating healthy to lose weight is one choice at a time and eventually it will become a way of life for you. When eating out, here are some good healthy food alternative tips for you. Always drink water, diet soda, or tea instead of regular soda or beverages that contain sugar or alcohol. A good healthy eating tip is order a salad because it fills you up, is low in fat and is loaded with vitamins. Get your dressings or sauces on the side, because you have control over how much you add. Here is a little trick, dip your fork in your salad dressing just before you fork your salad. You still taste the dressing but it cuts down on the amount you use. Another healthy eating tip if you choose a soup is, stay away from cream based soups because they are higher in fat than other soups. A soup can be a great appetizer, because most are low in calories and fill you up pretty fast. When you order grilled fish or vegetables, ask that the food be grilled without butter or oil, or prepared with very little. Oil and butter will increase your fat intake and why eat exactly what you are trying to lose? When you order pasta dishes, stick to tomato based sauces instead of the cream based sauces. Tomato based sauces are much lower in fat and a great healthy food alternative. When ordering a baked potato, ask for salsa instead of sour cream, butter, cheese, or even bacon. Salsa is very low in calories and provides a healthy food alternative with plenty of flavor and spice. When you are full, stop eating. It takes your brain about 20 minutes to register that your stomach is full. So slow down to taste and savor every bite. Remember you are eating healthy to lose weight so don’t be afraid to take half of your meal home. The second portion of your meal can be another meal later. This way, you get two meals for the price of one. Here are a couple of other healthy eating tips. You can always order two appetizers or an appetizer and a salad as your meal. Always look for food on the menu that’s baked, grilled, broiled, poached, or steamed. These types of cooking use less fat in the cooking process. As key ingredients to your meal, choose dishes with fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of dietary fiber and have lots of vitamins and minerals. Choose foods made with whole grains, such as whole wheat bread and dishes made with brown rice. If you crave dessert, look for something with low fat, such as berries or fruit. Always remember not to deprive yourself of the foods you truly love. All types of foods can fit into a well balanced diet. Eating healthy to lose weight is a great choice. Use these healthy eating tips next time you eat out and you can still enjoy weight loss success. Copyright 2006 Fat-Burning-Secret.com All Rights Reserved.
