The History of Wicker Garden Furniture

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Jared Winston Furniture is, quite obviously, an essential part of human society. Since well before the beginning of recorded history, people have been making use of at least some form of crafted furniture, and before that there can be little doubt that they made use of advantageous parts of their surroundings, such as well-shaped rocks or logs, with a similar end result. While the presence of furniture has not changed in all of this time, though, it can be certainly said that the furniture itself has very much changed over the years. In fact, essentially every aspect of furniture has changed, with the possible exception of its basic purpose. People still sit on chairs and set thing on tables, so change can only go so far. However, one of the most interesting aspects to look at chance through over time are the materials used in the creation of the furniture. Some materials, such as stone, have largely disappeared, replaced by new things such as plastics. And other materials have remained. Take as an example the wicker garden furniture that many people have in their gardens. Believe it or not, that wicker garden furniture is the modern incarnation of an ancient legacy of furniture construction. The processes that are used in the making of that wicker garden furniture are nothing new. They have been used, in some variation or another, since the days of the ancient Egyptians, and perhaps even farther back. Yes, wicker has its roots in the cultures of days long gone, where people had to make their furniture out of whatever they had on hand. While peoples such as the ancient Egyptians might not have had an abundance of all building materials, but there is one thing that they had a virtually endless supply of: reeds. The Nile River, you see, had banks that were lined with reeds by the thousands. Of course, with so many of these reeds around, it was only natural that the ancient Egyptians would find a constructive use for them, and that they did by weaving the reeds together into wicker baskets and furniture which were used for centuries in the ancient Egyptian empire. However, the wicker garden furniture you know and love had a long ways yet to go before reaching its present day form. As time went on, the practice of weaving reeds into wicker furniture and various wicker containers began to spread. At the time, Egypt was the trade capital of the Mediterranean area, and when money changes hands, culture often does as well. And so it was that the process of making wicker objects spread throughout the world, showing up very prominently in medieval European cultures, as well as many other places. People began using materials other than the reeds that were used in Egypt, such as willow rods, and other flexible woods that would not break when woven (such as bamboo.) Eventually as technology allowed, people even began using synthetic materials. And that brings the history of your wicker garden furniture to the present, although chances are, there are many years of wicker history yet to be written. Copyright Jared Winston, 2006. Is Sclerotherapy Safe?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Tracy Bautista Sclerotherapy is a safe and proven procedure with very few significant risks. However, it is important for anyone considering sclerotherapy to know that while complications are quite unlikely, they are a possibility. The most common complication of sclerotherapy is hyperpigmentation. Within a few weeks after treatment, some patients develop a brownish discoloration on the treated area. Usually, this disappears within 6-12 months although in some rare cases, the discoloration persists for more than a year. Matting or blushing around the injection site occurs to a few patients within weeks after surgery. This can be characterized by new, tiny blood vessels but they are often resolved within three to 12 months without further treatment. Also, a small scab may develop at the injection site if any of the solution escapes from the blood vessels. This can be easily treated, however, with an antibiotic ointment. There is little risk of infection or bleeding form sclerotherapy. You may go back to your regular daily activities immediately after the treatment. Walking and wearing heavy compression stockings to support treated vessels are recommended. To optimize results and sclerotherapy and minimize risks of complications, it is recommended that you visit a trusted cosmetic clinic that specializes in the treatment of vein disorders. Ensure that those performing the treatment are providers who have undergone extensive training. Also, strictly follow post-treatment instructions. Finally, fully understand your family history and pre-treatment evaluation to prevent, recognize and treat complications should they occur. Are You Jolting Up Your Weight Loss Program?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Gauri Rajesh Did you know that around 40% of the times it is you who blow up your weight loss program? Dont you believe it? It surely will sound incredible since you believe that you are taking utmost efforts to reduce weight and lose excess fat. But there are many things we do knowingly that deter us from our desired goal. In the following section we have named 10 common ways by which we ourselves destroy our weight loss campaign (check out where you went wrong). We have also given what needs to be done on these counts. Follow a strict dieting schedule: A strict dieting schedule where individual promises to eat only a particular food group/groups is particularly difficult to stick to. So do not cut out entire food groups or decide intake of only one type of food. Emotional eatingThe more depressed you are, the more you eat. Are you one such type of person? The disorder you are suffering from is known as emotional eating. Deal with the disorder professionally or else you would continue adding more weight to your body. Also trying to engage in alternative activities will help deflect attention. Going it alone:Dieting is an onerous process, with the individual having to undergo many a rough patches during the period. Unless he has someone to discuss with and support him in his venture, he is susceptible to dither away from his goal, i.e. reduce weight. So have a good support system to ensure that there is someone to counsel you every time. Excessive fasting:It has always been a misconception associated with weight loss- stop eating and you will lose weight. Fasting, unless for a smaller span of time such as 24 hours is no solution to weight. Instead one begins to lose fewer calories as fasting period extends. Human body is programmed to react in such situation by slowing down the metabolism as it perceives the situation as famine. Skip the breakfastThis is an extension of the myth discussed in the earlier paragraph. Skip breakfast and you consume lesser calories; so more weight loss. Is it true? No! At supper you eat more voraciously. So, no skipping of breakfast. Breakfast is an important meal of the day and gets metabolism going. Keep a food diary:A food diary is like a common budget. How much are you eating and how many calories do this produce is written on one side. On the other side is the standard written about the amount and food and calories that a normal healthy person is required. This will help get a real grasp of how one is faring in his weight loss program. Set realistic goals:The goals set by the dieter must be realistic. Unrealistic goals like cutting all soda from the present consumption of 2 liters a day is unachievable. They will largely affect the dieters motivations to continue with dieting. Weight in every day:Some dieters are so very excited and impatient with their dieting program that they will weigh themselves everyday. Does weight loss program or dieting produce such instant results? No! Moreover, the changes in the person may not always be quantifiable. This is incorrect since it lowers the motivation. Exercise regularly but within limits:Exercise regularly everyday. But do not overdo the exercise. This will not produce muscles in a day. Nevertheless, there are risks of overuse injuries. Strictly deny your favorite dishes:You resolve to cut the consumption of your favorite dish. But your heart fails to forget it. Will you be able to stick to your resolution? No, there will enough frustration. Instead cutting the quantum of the dish gradually will help. Rome was not built in a day. The same applies to your body. The changes will be perceived and visible with time, not overnight. So patience is the final answer. Gauri Rajesh has been associated with the health care industry for long. 5 Simple Lawn Watering Tips to Make Your Lawn Shine

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Jack Greenwood Your lawn needs the right amount of water to grow. However, you should not water your lawn blindly. The frequency and amount water needed for your lawn depend on various factors including the type of grass, soil, climate and many others. Here are five simple watering tips you can follow to make your lawn shine. 1. Water to a depth of 6-8 inches Grass roots usually grow to a depth of six to eight inches. Applying water that penetrates beyond eight inches is wasteful. On the other hand, penetrating less than six inches can result in a shallow-rooted lawn that is weak and require more efforts to maintain. For a quick test, use a screwdriver to probe the lawn ground. Once you feel that it is hard to probe further, pull out the screwdriver and check. Alternatively, buy a soil probe from the local nursery and use it to remove small cores of soil, which you can feel to see how wet they are. 2. Allow the lawn to dry out partially You should give your lawn ample time to dry out partially before watering it again. This will create a good air-moisture relationship that promotes healthy roots. Before you start watering again, take a walk on your lawn and observes your footprints. The grasses will not spring right back if they lack water. If the grasses changed to a dull color, this is also another indication that your lawn needs water. 3. Water in short interval If you water too fast, the lawn will not be able to absorb it and excess water will run off into the streets or other places. This is a waste of water and should be avoided. Try watering for fifteen minutes and then stop. Wait for ten minutes to let the water soak in. Then repeat the process again until the water has penetrated to a depth of six to eight inches. 4. Water in the early morning Water your lawn in the early morning is a wise choice. The weather is usually cool and clam. The humidity is also high and there will be less evaporation. Your lawn also has ample time to dry off before nightfall. A wet lawn in the night can cause lawn diseases to spread quickly. 5. Record your observation and adjust accordingly Get a notebook or journal and record your watering activity on a daily basis for at least three months. Note down the time of watering, the amount of water used and the intervals between each watering session.Observe how your lawn respond to your watering practice and record the result in your journal. If your lawn does not dry out enough between watering, increase the interval. If you discover that the water is not penetrating to the required depth, apply more water. Record all these observation into your journal. You should also make small changes to your watering practice and record the results. Over time, you will be able to water your lawn with greater efficiency as you adjust your watering practice based on your recorded observation. As a result, you will have a lawn that continues to shine and grow healthily without having to put in more maintenance efforts than necessary. Telling the Hard Truth

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Linda Dessau Watching televisions sitcoms, I cant help but notice that most of the plots revolve around the same theme someone being afraid to tell someone else the truth. We saw it in the years that Ross loved Rachel, that Niles loved Daphne, or that George hated Susan. We saw it in virtually every episode of Threes Company. Why do we keep the truth from people? Usually its for one of the following reasons (or a combination): we dont want to hurt someones feelings, were afraid the other person will be angry with us or we dont want to be embarrassed. What are the main consequences of not speaking up and telling the hard truth? It keeps us stuck in unfulfilling situations like jobs, relationships and other life circumstances. Here are some others: ~ Someone thinks you understand something you dont ~ Someone thinks youve agreed with something you havent ~ Someone thinks youre going to do something and youre not ~ Someone thinks you did something and you didnt ~ Someone doesnt know you love them and you do ~ Someone thinks you love them and you dont ~ Someone doesnt know what youre capable of ~ Someone thinks youre capable of something youre not How do you know when its time to tell the hard truth? From that first nagging feeling in your stomach that something about the situation is not right. Because theres no bad time to tell the hard truth. 5 ways that telling the hard truth is good for your self-care: 1. You deepen your relationships. Social support is a very important element of self-care. When you assume someone can handle hearing the hard truth, they usually rise to your expectations. When you learn to tell the hard truth in a relationship you can be yourself in that relationship. 2. You lose the stress. Hiding the truth and/or living a lie is very stressful! Telling the hard truth is the antidote. 3. You feel better about yourself. When youve done something courageous like telling someone the hard truth, youre sending yourself the message that maybe you can do OTHER hard things. 4. You create evidence that your own thoughts make you suffer look at an experience where you told the hard truth and notice that it was the anticipation of telling that created your worry and stress. Things that hadnt happened and may never happen, things you were creating in your own mind. And the reality rarely lives up to our feared expectations. 5. You can learn from the hard truth. Has someone told you a hard truth? Use it as a way of deepening your relationship or to improve something about the situation or yourself. Thank the person and recognize their courage for telling the hard truth. Who do you need to tell a hard truth? What hard truths have you been avoiding telling yourself? Weight Loss

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

By Angela Drummond Fad diets and exercise in a bottle are really only distractions. They are things which will only set us up for disappointment. Have you ever noticed how those magic pills always state somewhere in the disclaimer that it will work only in conjunction with a healthy eating plan and regular exercise? So what are the pills for then? Dont let the models in the advertisements fool you-they all go to the gym! The problem with these supplements is also that they may have adverse side effects on you. If you really think it is essential to take a dietary supplement, speak to your GP about it first. If I could give a tip on weight loss, it would be to go the natural way. Fruit and vegetables arent as bad as they were when you were a fussy little kid! And water just drink it! You should drink an average of 2 litres a day, regardless of any weight loss plans. Include vegetables in all your meals, and snack on fruits. Youll be surprised how your cravings for chocolates and other sweets things will start to diminish. Whether losing weight is a new venture for you, or you are simply trying to lose that last kilogram or centimetre of your waist to fit into those pants again, you will be faced with a challenge every day. It may be a temptation or it may be an unexpected cold. But these challenges are usually not as bad as we think. Motivation is hard to come by. Unfortunately I cannot argue. It is difficult to struggle through every little bite, every small step and every sip of water, but its as bad as you think. You need to find your own goal and dedicate yourself to it. If you really want to lose weight , this wont be too difficult, no matter the reason-be it for your health or to drop a dress size. Try and remember that there is a reason you are doing this and it is one which you have decided on. You may get sidetracked, but dont let that put you off entirely. Instead, set your goal, work towards it and when you get there you are the one who will be smiling! More Weight Loss hints and tips. Are Termites Eating You Out of House and Home?

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Aldene Fredenburg Human beings have been battling insects as long as both species have been on this planet. Bugs have been known to cause both mild and severe health problems, destroy crops, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. Termites, while not known to directly cause illness, can literally eat your house out from under you, causing structural damage that weakens your home, sometimes beyond repair. Termites are attracted to the protein content of various woods; different kinds of termites actually favor different woods, but one common issue is the moisture content of the wood. Termite infestations are especially prevalent in rainy weather or during periods of high humidity. Keeping your house moisture-free by grading the land around the house and using drain spouts to direct rain away from the building can eliminate a major source of attraction to termites. Basements in particular can be a big source of moisture in the home, but can be built or remodeled to be moisture-free. In the past fifty years, it has become standard practice to create a barrier around the home by chemically treating the soil around it. Chlordane was used for decades, and was extremely effective, but had major problems with its use. Exposure to chlordane has resulted in nervous system, liver damage, and in some cases, death. It’s easy to see the dangers inherent in chlordane use if you consider that children and pets, in particular, spend a lot of time playing, rolling around, and otherwise using the land immediately surrounding homes. Additionally, chemicals used as barriers can seep into home and commercial gardens and into the ground water and end up being absorbed by food plants, fish, and farm animals. Chlordane builds up in the systems of animals and humans, and can cause long-term health problems. Chlordane was banned by the EPA for most uses in 1983 and for eradicating termites in 1988. Other chemicals are now used instead of chlordane, but are less effective. In addition, bait traps are used insides houses to attract and kill termites already in the home. One problem with barrier methods is that they can easily be circumvented by termites, who actually build mud tubes which the termites use as tunnels to bypass barriers, including chemical barriers. One of the most noticeable signs of termite infestation is a series of long, thin mud tubes, which can appear in any area of the house. Termites can travel as much as fifty feet into the interior of a home. If you are considering buying a home, it’s wise to require a termite inspection as part of the sales agreement. If you already own a home and you suspect termites, or if you know other residents in your area have had termite infestations, hire a termite expert to inspect and, if necessary, treat your home. Find out just how they plan to both eliminate termites already in your home and how they are going to create a barrier to further infestation. Amazingly, even the kind of sand you use to create a barrier can have better or worse results. Be sure to ask questions about any chemicals used, and the toxic effects of those chemicals; some chemicals are safer than others. And finally, inspect your home for areas of high moisture, and eliminate any moisture problems you discover. Controlling the moisture in your home may be the best line of defense against termites.
