The New Marriage - Part Four of Four

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Dr. Linda Miles When we are children we do not yet have an identity. We learn about who we are through the mirroring that we get from our parents. It is called mirroring to describe the ability of good parents to gently hold up an imaginary mirror in front of the child until they learn to see themselves clearly without harsh judgments. If we do not get enough realistic mirroring during the years we live with them, we remain pretty clueless about who we really are. I am always so pleased to see parents who appropriately mirror their children. By providing them feedback about their behavior without shame or blame, parents help children grow up with a realistic self-image and the ability to operate from a strong sense of self. In my childrens book, Amanda Salamander, written with Martin Terrell, we tell the story of a beautiful young salamander who changes herself into the color of whomever she is with so that they will like her. This is quite characteristic of what we learn to do when we do not have a good picture of who we are. In the story, Amanda Salamander turns into the color of her husband so that he will like her. This brings many problems into their marriage, because she is not being true to herself. We wrote Amanda Salamander to advise children of the perils of entering a relationship by pretending to be someone else. When we read this story to our five-year-old granddaughter, she already understood what we were talking about. We asked her what the lesson was in this story and she responded, You should stay your same color when you get married. However, we first need to know what our true color is! An example of a parent doing a good job of mirroring a sense of self to her children without shame and blame occurred one day when we took a picture of a group of neighborhood children. Except for one four-year-old girl well call Lillith, all the children were boys. Lillith wanted to be in the middle of the picture, and when the boys refused, she began to whine. Its not hard to guess the reaction of young boys to a whining girl. This behavior was obviously not in her best interest. Lilliths mother wisely called her over to the side and knelt down to her level. She explained, Lillith, you know that thing you do that causes you problems? You are doing it right now. What this woman was doing so naturally was mirroring back behavior that was not in the childs best interest without sounding overly judgmental. Therefore, she was helping Lillith to begin to look at her own behavior and to self-correct. Consequently, Lillith pushed herself into the middle of the boys and they seemed to respect this behavior and allowed her to get her picture taken. Ultimately, that is not the behavior that we would want to encourage. Lillith, however, is beginning to experiment with something different based on her mothers mirroring. Sadly, I have seen countless adults who really do not have a sense of who they are. I was present when one woman realized that when her husband had asked her to marry him, all she had thought about was whether he would want to marry her. She had never even asked herself whether she might want to marry him. The clinical term for the development of a self is differentiation . Developed by a brilliant family therapist named Murray Bowen, this concept refers to our ability to be close to others and also maintain a sense of self. This is perhaps the most difficult task that we have in our lives. It requires a great deal of learning and trial and error to begin to figure out who we are. We are not doomed if we do not develop an accurate mirror as children. This can be developed through our relationships as adults. Statins: A New Hope in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr.Nelson_Hargove] Dr.Nelson Hargove Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis occurring in people who suffer from recurrent bouts of joint pain, swelling and deformity. Apart from inflammation of the joints, there are abnormal changes in blood vessels in these people which puts them at an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack prematurely and reduction in life-expectancy. Excess number of deaths due to cardiovascular cause were consistently observed in people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. A drug that controls the inflammation and also prevents changes in blood vessels will be highly useful in these people. Statins (e.g. lovastatin, simvastatin) have shown lot of promise in this regard. Statins inhibit an enzyme of the lipid metabolism called as HMG-CoA reductase; therefore they are called as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Process of atherosclerosis i.e. clogging of blood vessels with cholesterol is accelerated in inflammatory arthritis. The levels of good (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol are abnormally low while those of bad (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol are higher in inflammatory arthritis. Statins reduce the low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and inhibit atherosclerosis. As atherosclerosis is the culprit for vascular events like heart attack and stroke, the risk of these diseases is also reduced. Apart from lowering lipid levels, the statins were found to have anti-inflammatory action in recent studies. In inflammatory arthritis, statins may suppress the inflammatory response of the synovial membrane which lines the joint cavity. Statins act on blood cells like lymphocytes and macrophages which are responsible for inflammation and inhibit the release of harmful chemicals like cytokines from these cells. As inflammation is responsible for clinical features of inflammatory arthritis, statins markedly improve the clinical picture in these patients. Statins not only relieve pain and stiffness, but also retard the ongoing process of joint destruction. Leung et al found that atorvastatin suppressed immune responses and cytokine release in mice. Abud-Mendoza C et al found that simvastatin showed marked improvement in signs and symptoms in patients with refractory rheumatoid arthritis which was unresponsive to methotrexate, a powerful drug. Similarly, atorvastatin was shown to be highly effective in rheumatoid arthritis in a recent randomized controlled trial. Inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis is not confined to the joints only. Low-grade inflammation exists in blood vessels also. This along with malfunction of endothelial cells lining blood vessels may accelerate the atherosclerotic process leading to vascular events such as heart attack at younger age as compared with normal population. Statins suppress this inflammation and inhibit release of harmful free radicals. Statins also improve the function of endothelial cells. Statins also reduce the levels of C-reactive protein, an independent risk factor for heart disease. Thus statins act as protectors against vascular events and may reduce the morbidity due to these diseases. Statins should be used in rheumatoid arthritis unresponsive to treatment with disease modifying anti-Rheumatic drug (DMARD) as adjuvant therapy. They can also be used in protection against vascular diseases. The existing statins are mainly developed to act as lipid modulating agents rather than anti-inflammatory drugs. Further research is required for developing new statins who have more potent anti-inflammatory action. Recently, a new statin, Geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) has been found to have potent anti-inflammatory effects. Further trials are required to prove its efficacy and safety. Thus statins will play increasingly important role in management of inflammatory arthritis due to their multiple benefits. They improve the quality of life by relieving the symptoms of arthritis and at the same time protect a person from premature death due to cardiovascular causes. References: 1. Bridal Accessories To Complete Your Wedding Look

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

By Andrea Britt Bridal accessories are as necessary to complete the bridal look, as packaging is to a wedding gift. The wedding gown would be incomplete without matching wedding accessories. Heres a quick rundown of the bridal accessories you want to pay attention to.Wedding veils: Other than the wedding gown, the veil is another piece of wedding accessories that shouts Here comes the bride! If you choose to wear a wedding veil, make sure you pick one that suits you and your wedding gown. Veils come in varying lengths. The shoulder length flyaway style is very popular with modern brides. However, the traditional cathedral veil is ultraformal and three and one-half yards long. That is one bridal accessory that makes a statement! Headpieces: Generally, headpieces are used to attach the veil in place. Combs, headbands, backpieces and Juliet caps are all popular bridal accessories. These wedding accessories look very beautiful and are decorated with pearls, crystals, beads, lace or even flowers! You can also choose to skip the veil altogether and just wear a headpiece. Tiaras, crowns, half-crowns, wreaths and bunwraps are bridal accessories that dont need a veil to complete the look. Jewelry: The wedding jewelry you wear adds a finishing touch to your bridal outfit. Your engagement ring and wedding band is a given. However, dont forget about the necklace, earrings and possibly a bracelet. Jewelry is a great way to take care of the something old, new, borrowed and blue. Family heirlooms work really well as bridal jewelry. Also, pearls are classic but diamonds are ever popular too. Shoes & stockings: Finding the right shoes to complement your bridal gown can be almost as difficult as finding the gown itself! Comfort should be your top priority when shopping for this bridal accessory since you will be on your feet most of the time. Fabrics like velvet, satin and silk lend a delicate and formal touch to your wedding shoes. Add a bit of embellishment like beads, sequins, pearls or crystals and youll feel as special as Cinderella! Gloves: Gloves are making a comeback as a bridal accessory, assisted by the increasing preference for strapless and sleeveless gowns. In general the trend is that the shorter the sleeve the longer the glove. Handbags: You wont be carrying this bridal accessory with you all the time. However, it is a good idea to have a small purse on hand to hold small items for touch-ups. Clutches work well. In general, bridal accessories help complete the wedding look. While your gown makes up eighty percent of your bridal look, it would be left incomplete without complementing bridal accessories. So take the time to accessorize your wedding day outfit, the simple details make will make you all the more stunning. Copyright Andrea Britt, 2005. All rights reserved. If You Like Variety In Your Cuisine You Must Try The Culinary Delights From The Dominican Republic

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Gregg Hall Those who believe the Dominican Republic serves typical Caribbean cuisine, guess again. With a plethora of fresh seafood, fruits, vegetables, and meats, the Dominican Republic blends culinary styles from Latin America, Spain, and France. As a result, the dishes are an amazing blend of flavors, mild spices, and varying textures. Unlike the chain stores in many countries, the Dominican Republic prides itself on selling fresh ingredients from their local markets. Typical foods are sweet potatoes, goat meat, pig meat, fresh saltwater fish, shellfish, mangoes, papayas, plantains, cassava melon, coconuts, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and passion fruit. Given the abundance of high quality foods, it is not surprising that locally prepared dishes are delightful treats. Pigs are an important aspect in the Dominican Republic’s meat markets. Spicy longaniza sausages hang from racks in many butchers. Pork is slowly roasted over a spit to a tender state of perfection. The Dominican Republic follows a traditional Spanish custom in which workers leave their jobs at noon and go home for a leisurely meal with their family before returning to work two or three hours later. This leisurely break is called La Bandera. During these lengthy meals, bowls of rice, meats stewed with beans, vegetables, fried plantains, and pitchers of water or other beverages are shared. The family enjoys time together, clean up, and then return to finish their work or school day. Many see the Dominican Republic as a poor area, but despite this image, their food is rich and hearty. The lack of wealth for some does not cause the dinner table to go empty. Full lunches together still occur five days a week. Many wealthy families in other countries cannot boast having so much quality family time! Sancocho, a delightful soup filled with huge chunks of meat and vegetables, is served for many meals. The soup usually contains pork or beef and then onions, sweet potatoes, potatoes, yucca root, plantains, cassava root, and broth. For celebrations, seven meats are mixed to enhance the glamour of this dish. Pastel en Hoja blends marinated meat cubes with other ingredients and then slowly steams the mixture inside banana leaves. Fish steamed with vegetables in coconut milk is also served in many homes. For dessert, fried portions of dough similar to Churros or fresh fruit are both extremely popular. Chicharrones de Pollo is the Dominican Republic’s answer to fried chicken. Chicken pieces are coated in a mildly spiced flour mixture and then fried to golden perfection. The food of Dominican Republic is a culinary treat that no person should miss. Even if one is not traveling to the area, it is easy to make some of these dishes in the comfort of your own home. What a way to celebrate a fabulous country’s cuisine. Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach, Florida. Ice Fishing Basics

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Jack Phillips First and formost an ice fisherman needs the location of good lakes for ice fishing. Usually a lake that produces lots of fish in the summer fishin season will also produce numerous fish in the winter. Many factors in a lake in winter affect fish life, changing their reactions, their feeding habits, and even their survival rate. For instance a heavy layer of snow over the ice will cut down on the amount of light that filters into the water, reducing weed growth and oxygen production. This will result in the fish becoming lethargic, interested in only conserving their energy to survive rather than wasting energy to feed and move around. Lakes that are weed choked in the summer is usually is shallow and contains very few deep pools or spots that contain oygen rich pockets for fish to congregate, and may not be able to sustain a large fish population in the winter months. Lakes that produce great numbers of fish in summer are likely to congregate in these poolos and use up the oxygen and they will not all survive. Fish die off in the winter does not mean that severe oxygen depletion has occured throughout the whole lake; certain areas will still produce good ice fishing results. Consider all factors when choosing a lake for ice fishing. ICE FISHING SPOTS For new folks ice fishing the best spot to start is to go where the crowds or people are before you start to experiment. The ice fish crowd loves to socialise while fishing as it ads to the enjoyment. The willingness to share good fishing spots with others is and advntage to the newcomer to ice fishing. No one minds if a few more holes are cut and some more fish taken. Most other anglers will be more than willing to discuss their success and the bait or lures that have been most successful. Most successful fishermen do not mind sharing their secrets and many oldtimers derive great satisfaction helping a newcomer to ice fishing the advantages of his years of experience. You will some exceptions to this but do not be afraid to ask and let someone know you are new to ice fishing. LOCATING FISH Finding the location of fish is frustrating at times. Remember fish in the winter act different than in the summer months. The only requirement for a fish in winter is to eat enough to survive. They generally feed only part of the day to not waste a lot of their energy. The competition for food seems to be the key to fish feeding habits while ice fishing. Many ice fiashermen do not consider all the noise of cutting holes setting up huts will affect the fish. After you settle down to fishing and stop all noisey movement the fish will come back and be more active. ICE FISHING EQUIPMENT It is not all that expensive to get started ice fishing ( but you can get expensive if you wish). When you decide how much of your time will be spent ice fishing then go from there. For the weekend ice fishing angler I would suggest a standard ice fishing rod, which can be purchased at any sorting goods store. The rod is seldom more than a fiberglass rod about two feet long with two line guides and a small take up reel. The line can be from 2 to 6 pound test monofilament. Bobbers are a handy thing for ice fishing so keep a couple in your pack. You will also need a variety of lures, hooks, sinkers, swivels and other basic fishing tackle. Also a chisel, ice spud or ice auger for your ice fishing holes. Hit your local bait store before you leave to pick any live bait needed for the species and lake you intend to fish. Don’t overdo it on your first ice fishing trip out onto the lake. Go out early in the morning and fish till noon, and call it a day. If the fish are biting you should have caught your share by then. If the fish don’t bite worry not you will have learnt to use the new equipment. The next trip out you will be even more eqipped and ready for all the fish you will catch. DRESSING FOR ICE FISHING Dressing comfortably for ice fishing presents some problems that do not confront other outdoor winter activities. The chief concern is to stay warm at all times, but ice fishing by nature involves extremes of activity that will cause you to perspire if you are dressed to warmly, and then freeze when you sit too long. You may work up a swet just getting there and setting up to start fishing. Then sitting for a long time once fishing then you are cold. The secret is to dress warmly for travel and have more to put on for the periods of inactivity. A good snowmobile outfit covers all the needs of most ice fishermen. Remember layers under the parka, you can always take it off if you are too warm. Get out ther and enjoy, catch some fish and you will become and addict of fishing in all seasons. Is There a Magic Marketing Formula? - Part 1

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Jane Hendry One of the biggest mistakes that I see small business owners make is to spend their money (or time) on marketing or advertising, not get the results they want and then conclude that marketing doesn’t work. Or they keep on spending their money and time on advertising, despite their lack of results and convince themselves that it’s “raising their profile”. (In reality, it’s probably just money down the drain.) The main reason that their marketing doesn’t produce the results that they want is because they’ve usually missed out or half done one of the ingredients of their “marketing formula” or are doing things in the wrong order. Getting your marketing right is a bit like baking a cake - you need the right ingredients, in the right proportions, added in the right sequence and baked at the right temperature. What can a good “marketing formula” do for you? A good marketing formula can help you to: * raise response to all of your marketing activities so that you have more leads in your pipeline for the same investment * make your marketing profitable (as it should be!) rather than an expense * secure more sales from the presentations you do and the appointments you attend Once you’ve worked out your formula, most of your campaigns will be successes and you can use your formula over and over again to continually reproduce outstanding results. To illustrate the point, one famous marketer claims to have done a direct mail campaign that got a 100% response! In other words, everyone that he sent his letter to bought his product or service. Now, that is unheard of in a world where a 3% response rate is considered to be good. Another marketer claims to turn 98% of all telephone consultations into business (and 40% is generally considered to be doing OK in her field). These people have got their marketing formulas highly tuned and working very hard for them. Can you achieve the same results? Well, you may not ever achieve a 100% response to a mailshot, (that was probably an exceptional case) but you can certainly improve the performance of your marketing and start making it pay once you know and understand the ingredients of marketing success. So what are the ingredients and steps of a good “marketing formula”? Your marketing formula is comprised of two parts: The ingredients: This is really the foundation of your marketing - it’s the groundwork that allows whatever marketing activities you undertake to actually work and give you good results. The ingredients are: * a very clear target market (preferably one that is hungry for what you offer) * a thorough understanding of your target market - what concerns them, why they would buy your services, what motivates them and how you can identify and locate them * a good value proposition (the tangible outcome you deliver) * an irresistible offer * an understanding of the competitive landscape and where your company fits in (or in other words - your differentiation and your positioning) * a strong, client-attracting message You can have brilliantly executed marketing, but if the ingredients are wrong, then you’re either going to attract all the wrong types of people, or attract multitudes less than you are really capable of. Either way, you would be wasting your marketing effort and budget. The steps: These are the steps that you take to implement your marketing, and the sequence you move your potential buyers through en-route to them becoming loyal clients. These include: * the strategy you use to get your compelling message in front of your target market * where and how you place your message for maximum impact in the budget you’ve allocated (your message can be delivered verbally or in written form) * the timing of your message * the steps your prospects need to be taken through to turn them from strangers into paying clients A weakness or failure at any of these points will lead to reduced response and lowered conversion rates - and that means weak results and wasted investment. It’s somewhat like a chain - the system fails at the weakest points, so all points have to be as strong as possible. So if you want your marketing to succeed, you need a good formula - the right ingredients combined in the right steps. Just like baking a cake - if you do things in the wrong order, or miss steps out, you’ll end up with a result you didn’t want - a burnt cake, a cake that’s rock hard or biscuits instead! In part two of this series of articles I’ll discuss the ingredients in more detail - so look out for it in a couple of weeks. :-) Copyright 2005 Attractioneering Jane Hendry helps professionals, consultants and coaches to create marketing systems that easily and consistently attract their ideal clients. Stress Relief Provided by Herbal Medicine

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Grace Palce Chances are, you may not know about the use of herbal medicine to provide stress relief. We certainly cant blame if you dont. Herbal medicine, after all, is still trying to gain its former popularity and so many people are still in doubt of its efficacy and prefer to use prescription medicine instead. But you see, if you take the time to check historical texts, the use of herbal medicine can date back as far as 5,000 years ago! The efficacy of herbal medicine, therefore, should not be in doubt anymore since its supported by five millennia worth of proof. Before we give you an example of herbal medicine that can provide stress relief, however, we shall give you a little bit of dos and donts on the subject of herbal medicine to ensure safety and proper use. Do consult your doctor first before taking any herbal medicine to fight stress or for whatever reason. Self-medication is never good and it can bring you a lot of complications that could have easily been avoided if you had only asked your doctor about your chosen type of medication. When consulting your doctor, do bring a sample of your herbal medicine so hell be able to analyze whether its real and of good quality. To safeguard yourself from cheap herbal medicine imitations, always buy from any herbal medicine store of good and long standing reputation. These stores may even offer money back guarantee and of course, that wouldnt hurt at all. Your doctor may also make you aware if there would be any possible negative reactions if and when you do take a particular herbal medicine. That doesnt mean you cant take herbal medicine anymore to gain provide relief; it simply means that youre just not able to take that particular herbal medicine and you have to search for another. Lastly, if youre already taking prescription medicine, you truly need to visit your doctor before taking herbal medicine as well because there are instances when a combination of both can result to unwanted complications. And now for an example of herbal medicine that can provide stress relief: Catnips One of the most common symptoms of stress are diarrhea, increased or loss of appetite and anxiety. If these are stress symptoms that trouble you most, this herbal medicine is definitely what you need because it nurtures the stomach and nerves. Kada Kava This herbal medicine can provide stress relief by vanquishing symptoms like insomnia (typical of workaholics who love to do overtime) and anxiety (typical of workaholics who have high pressure jobs). For Your Career’s Midlife Crisis: Are You a Jumper or a Clinger?

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Cathy Goodwin Over the years, I have identified two kinds of midlife career changers: Jumpers and Clingers. Jumpers thrive on energy, enthusiasm and improbable luck. The last three times they leaped, a net appeared. They see no reason why the next jump should be any different. Clingers thrive on careers that offer security, money and identity. When they outgrow their careers, or find themselves forced out, they feel lost. They can’t remember the last time they found themselves in this position. Coaching jumpers and clingers for career change Jumpers call a coach when they are ready to find a new mountain. Suggest a destination and they ask, “Where is it?” Often they’ve made another leap before the coach realizes what is going on. Clingers call a coach when they find themselves lost in the jungle. They ask, “How do I know if I’ve made the right decision?” and, “How can I find security?” They hold out a one-way ticket, asking, “How do I change to a round trip?” Jumpers have learned to accept that sinking-feeling-in-the-gut as they leap off the mountain. Climbers are not used to feeling edgy. They don’t want a roadmap; they want a hotel reservation, preferably chosen from a listing in the auto club directory. Career change lessons for jumpers and clingers Both Jumpers and Clingers face a new reality. Even the bravest Jumper can run out of luck. Choose the wrong mountain and the net never appears. And in the twenty-first century, Clingers must create their own security. Jumpers must stop at the edge of the mountain, before the point of no return. “Does this feel right?” they have to ask. “Should I look first this time, to see if the net really exists? Or maybe instead of leaping it’s time to climb down more carefully, one ledge at a time.” Clingers also have to ask, “Does this feel right?” Like Jumpers, they must look for safety nets. They learn to read maps and differentiate between dangerous potholes and afternoon shadows. And when they can’t get a guaranteed hotel reservation, they learn to make a contingency plan to avoid sleeping in the park. Jumpers learn to walk where they used to run. Clingers learn to walk where they used to ride. Most people will combine the qualities of jumpers and clingers, but you can save a lot of grief by knowing your prevailing style. Jumpers need guides who say, “Stop! Think!” Clingers need guides who motivate them to go. Over-motivated jumpers become daredevils; over-planned clingers lose momentum. Disasters and Victories Both jumpers and clingers can head for disaster. Jumpers leap into icy water or treacherous rocks. Clingers find their once-secure shelter has been blown over by a hurricane. Popular Types of Noni Fruit Drinks

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Steve Valentino Noni fruit drink is available at brick-and-mortar health food stores as well as online vendors. It is also available from individual members of multi-level marketing companies, but it is recommended that you buy from an established seller. Noni fruit drink can be expensive sometimes $60 per liter, but a little goes a long way. Recommended dosage is only one or two ounces daily, on an empty stomach for best absorption. You can buy any of three basic types of noni fruit drink. The purest form is made of pure noni juice. There are no pulps, seeds, leaves, or bark. It contains the highest concentration of nutrients. Bear in mind that the label might claim the contents to be 100% noni juice, but there might still be water added. (The added liquid reduces the pungent taste.) The second purest form is pureed noni fruit. This is whole noni fruit, minus the seeds. The concentration of nutrients is not as high as with pure noni, but there is a much wider array of nutrients, affording you some of the more fibrous parts of the fruit. When buying noni juice made by this method, look for a 70% juice concentration or higher. The third form of noni juice is powder to be mixed with other liquids, such as raspberry juice, cranberry juice, or orange juice. It usually takes 10 to 20 pounds of noni fruit to make one pound of powder. To re-hydrate, just pour in powder at a volume rate 1/10th to 1/20th that of the desired volume of liquid. It is available in bulk for about anywhere from $20 to $60 a pound. Noni Juice Info provides comprehensive information on Noni fruit drinks, juice, capsules, preparation, benefits, and history.
