By Marc Menninger Cleansing is a dietary practice that spans back through the centuries. It is a natural way to clear the body of toxins and built up waste products that was used in ancient medicine. Because of its effectiveness, cleansing is enjoying a reemergence of popularity today. The practice of cleansing, which is also known as detoxification (or detox) is used for a number of purposes. Cleansing may be used to simply give the body a healthy boost or as a precursor to another holistic approach. The most popular use of cleansing in modern society is for dietary cleansing. Cleansing diets are simple and effective. They work quickly to produce significant weight loss results. Basics Of Cleansing Diets There are many, many different kinds of cleansing diets with different recipes and variations of foods and drinks. Some are strictly liquid diet protocols and are often considered fasting diets while others combine beneficial drink recipes and natural juices with healthy foods such as protein shakes, organic fruits and vegetables. A very basic description of a cleansing diet would be this: Cleansing starts with a diet plan (in many cases mostly or all liquid) that is followed for two to ten days (sometimes longer but care must be taken). Maintenance cleanses are periodically necessary, and in most cases it takes more than one good cleanse to clean out a damaged system; this is build-up that took years to accumulate–you should not expect it to be quickly removed. Changes to lifestyle further enhance the effectiveness of cleansing diets. There are a number of benefits to using cleansing diets. While many people look towards cleansing diets strictly for simplified (no need to count calories or read confusing labels, etc.) and fast-acting weight loss purposes, the many advantages of good bodily cleansing are also appreciated. Among these advantages are an improved energy level and better overall health; even the skin is better, often clearing away skin disorders. Bowels become regulated. Concentration and mental acuity improve. Living for Real Healing - Adapting to Change is the Way of Life

By Iris Bell, MD PhD “If you want things to stay as they are, things will have to change.” — Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa Scientists tell us that your body is a living system in motion. As along as you live, your system is constantly moving through patterns of repeating activity. All systems generate their own patterns of behavior. Sometimes you get stuck in these patterns e.g., finding one bad relationship after another (the names change but the story ends up pretty much the same). You dont do exactly the same thing every time, but close. In one sense, these ruts are bad habits of how you usually live in your world. The situation is similar for your health and healing. That is, you can get stuck in patterns of bodily dysfunction that lead to any number of diseases, disorders, or health problems. For instance, if you tense our neck and back at work every day because of sitting at a poorly-designed chair while reacting with stifled anger to the bosss unreasonable demands, you could end up with frequent tension headaches. If you changed the chair or the boss or just experienced the situation differently physically and emotionally, your health would change too. Problems can arise from an interaction of your with your environment - who you are, what you perceive and experience as stressful, and what your genetic potential sets us up to do when you undergo stress. This process happens at the physical level as much as at the social or behavioral level of your life. The first step is getting unstuck. If you live in a specific neighborhood of grasses and trees (a type of physical stressor) to which you are allergic, you can activate a runny nose or asthma or you can move to a different neighborhood without the grasses and trees and be allergy-free. Or, if you cant move away, you can shift the way your immune system reacts to the presence of grasses and trees. Realistically, you cant avoid all stress at all times. You even need some stress and challenges to grow and develop in positive ways as a human being. When you are sick, however, you can’t bounce back to health as quickly as someone who doesn’t have the same health problem. As a system, you have lost your resilience, your adaptability to change in your inner and outer lives. So, the goal of true healing is restoring your ability to adapt to changes and challenges in your environment. In alternative medicine, many different mind-body approaches can help us improve how you experience your life. Various forms of meditation, hypnosis, and guided imagery, for example, can help you learn to allow situations to arise, but to respond differently, with a new and healthier pattern of behavior in your physiology and your psychology. When that happens, you begin to shift internally, to change, to have the freedom to establish healthier patterns of being and living as a whole system. Mind-body techniques are only one way to change toward the goal of resilience. For children and adults with behavioral problems, for instance, even with violence, some research suggests that taking good multivitamin-multimineral combination products, i.e., particular mixtures of nutritional supplements, can really calm things down. Since some studies even happened in prisons, the external situations that usually trigger violence dont change but the reactions of the individuals do. Finally, adding some form of constitutional treatment such as acupuncture, classical homeopathy, or Ayurveda, to support deep and lasting change throughout you as a whole system can be invaluable. When you develop the right program of care for your individual needs, you likely will experience improvements in overall energy and sense of well-being. You will be more adaptive and resilient in the face of change. Annoying symptoms that you had just resigned yourself to experiencing may improve or go away. Your outlook on life, even your sense of purpose and meaning, can become renewed and changed in a better, positive way. These are the kinds of changes that take time to develop and grow. Usually no single treatment makes them happen. It takes a coordinated approach. But these positive changes in patterns are possible with the right program of treatment, assembled by you for your specific life and circumstances. Health Spa Treatments Using Lavender Herbs From Your Own Herb Garden

By Mary Hanna Health spa treatments can be costly. Have you ever considered creating your own home spa by using lavender and other herbs from your own herb garden? After all of the hours you spent planting and tending to your herb plants, reap another benefit by using your herbs to make herbal cosmetics, herbal teas or herbal medicines and by all means as ingredients for a home spa. Some people have spaghetti herb gardens, or salad gardens even headache gardens, consider this your own Spa Herb Garden! For very soft touchable skin use Lavender or Calendula leaves and petals. Bruise the leaves and petals and put them into a glass jar. Pour enough olive oil into the jar to cover the herbs. Set the jar on a sunny window and shake everyday for two to three weeks. Strain the oil through cheese cloth pressing on the solids to remove all essential oils. Reseal the jar and place in a dark place. The herbal oil should last up to one year. This soothing Lavender oil can be applied directly to the skin or used in a bath. Put lavender flowers and leaves into a warm bath and soak. Or put them in a muslin bag which you will hook over the running water while filling the tub. The Lavender will fill your bathroom with a wonderful scent. Since Lavender is known for its calming effect, what better way to relax after a day of gardening than a long soothing bath filled with Lavender? Lavender is a natural anti depressant so place bowls of dried lavender around the house. Or since Lavender is known for its claming effect, boil a large pot of water, throw in the lavender, and place a towel over your head as you bend down over the pot. Inhale in the delightful smell and feel its soothing properties from the steam on your skin. Another lovely way to use Lavender is to sew them into little bags and put them between your pillow and pillow case. The beautiful calming scent will help you sleep. Calendulas may also be used in the bath. An even better way to use this herb is as an antiseptic. Again, bruise the leaves and flowers and add them to olive oil. It will relieve stings, chapped lips, cuts and burns. To make you’re won spa loofahs plant Luffa aegyptiaea. For a home spa tool grow the plant in full sun in a place where the plant can climb. When you harvest it, soak it in water to soften the brown skin, peel and set out in the sun to dry. Save the seeds for your next years Spa Herb Garden. Now let’s make some refreshing teas using herbs from your herbal garden for use in your mini home spa. Most people look at roses as just beautiful blooms, but rose hips have more vitamin C than oranges. The little round balls in the center of the rose is the hips. Gather them and grind them in a coffee grinder. Steep them in very hot water, not boiling, for about ten minutes and enjoy your fruity tea. For a calming tea try Chamomile or for a refreshing tea try Lemon balm. All of these herbs can be grown in your own yard and will create a wonderful home health spa experience. TV’s Effects On Your Family - Lessons From The Easter Egg Hunt

By Katherine Westphal It was the big Easter Egg Hunt. My friend Christy and I lined up with the other kids. We all gazed greedily at the field of goodies before us. “GO!” yelled the announcer. En masse, we rushed forwards. For some reason, everyone veered to the left. I stopped. I glanced at the untouched feast to my right. I ran right, gleefully scooping the candy before the rest caught on. At the end, I had a bagful of candy. Christy, who had followed the herd, had one piece. I was eight at the time, but I never forgot that day or its lessons. What did I do differently from the other kids that day? I simply stopped. I stopped, looked around, and analyzed the situation. And I left the herd. I saw quickly that it was to my advantage NOT to follow the herd that day. Leaving the TV herd In 2003 I left the herd again in a much bigger way. I got rid of my TV. I am one of those rare few that do not have a TV, by choice. And I am reaping the benefits of being TV-free. The reason? In 2001, the kids and I were without TV for several months. Like I did when I was little, I stopped. This time I took notice of the changes in my children and myself during the time we did not have a TV. Then when we got it back, I took notice of the changes again. Based on my observations, I decided we were better off without a TV. Stop and observe YOUR family But it does not matter what TV does to me or my kids. It does not matter that numerous studies show TV’s links to obesity, illiteracy, consumerism, etc. The real question is: How does TV affect you and your family? Find out by stopping and observing. Zombie kids Stop and observe how your body and mind react to TV. Look deeply into your kids zombie-like eyes as they watch TV. Compare that to the look in their eyes as they play outdoors. How do you and your spouse look when watching TV? Take pictures if necessary. Take note of how your children behave after they have spent the afternoon in front of the TV set. How do they behave after playing with their friends? How well do you behave after watching several hours of TV? Your spouse? You may need to get an outside opinion for accuracy. Consumers ‘R Us How do your children behave at the store when confronted with the cool blue gizmo that has been advertised for months on TV commercials? Are they whining and begging and nagging incessantly for that gizmo? How much extra money do you spend chasing the latest fads and fashions, as shown on TV? Feelin’ Groovy Observe how much you really remember of that educational program you just saw. How well do you remember the last book you read in comparison? Test yourself. Stop and consider how you feel after watching several hours of television. Do you feel alert, happy, and energetic? Or do you feel lethargic and depressed and ready to turn the TV back on? Keep a diary to get an accurate assessment. Family Time? Most importantly, monitor the number of hours you and your family spend in front of the TV per week. Is it 20?…30?…40? The average American spends 28 hours per week in front of a TV set. How much do you watch? Now ask yourself: Is this how you really want to spend your time? Is this how you want your kids to spend their time? By age eighteen the average American will have spent three full years in front of the TV? By age seventy the total is 11.67 years. Stop and think if this is what you really want out of life. I did, and I got rid of my TV. Elton Johns first single, Come Back, Baby released with his band, Bluesology, never made it to the charts. He failed his audition for Liberty Records and his 1968 debut album Empty Skies flopped. Dustin Hoffman dropped out of Santa Monica City College. Unable to find an acting job in New York, he worked as a janitor and an attendant in a hospital mental ward. - - - Each of these celebrities went on to become world famous in their chosen professions. The success we attribute to each of them today was hard won. What if Barbara Walters had taken Don Hewitts words to heart? What if Elton John had seen his audition and the flop of his debut album a sign he should give up? What if Dustin Hoffman had stayed put, working in the hospital mental ward? The trick is to pursue your career and lifestyle aspirations and not give up! The barriers can seem insurmountable yet the world is diminished when we dont follow our destiny. Confront real, imagined barriers In his most recent book, Second Acts: Creating the life you really want, building the career you truly desire, Stephen Pollan lists 12 common barriers to entry people face forging new directions after discovering their work unfulfilling: Age Money Duration (amount of time to get into it) Consent of others (spouse, other family members) Location Physical condition (for example, body build to be a basketball player) Education and training Timing Esteem Fear of failure Fear of Success Fatalism (thinking destiny is fixed) Which of these barriers do you face in fulfilling a career aspiration? Many seem larger than they really are because of our own internal barriers. For example: Perhaps you think you are too old to pursue a particular career direction. Is that truly the case or have you made your mind up without doing the research necessary to determine whether your hunch is entirely true? What if your age actually could be an advantage, setting you apart from others? Remember feisty octogenarian Clara Peller who asked Wheres The Beef? in the Wendys commercials in the 1980s? Her age made her a cult figure, adding to the impact of her persona in those television commercials. More than 15 years after her death, her name comes up today in a Google Internet search, in German, Chinese and English. What if money is the barrier that keeps you from pursuing your most fulfilling dreams? Next to age, money seems to be the barrier of greatest concern to people considering a new career direction, Pollan says. As with age, we may wrongly conclude that money is a barrier without doing the research. Assess your financial capacity Start with a complete review of your finances, including wages, savings and other assets, and your current expenses. It will clarify your actual financial needs and wherewithall, compared to your imagined financial capacity. A great way to measure your income against expenses is a free template offered on Microsofts web site. You can download this Excel spreadsheet, use the categories provided on the sheet, or create your own. Find the template at www.officeupdate.microsoft.com/TemplateGallery/(choose the Personal Finance link and then the Personal Budget template). After assessing your actual expenses and income sources, you may be able to shave non-essential expenses long enough to squirrel away enough money to finance your cherished career dream. You also may discover short-term ways to increase your income by moonlighting or selling some assets. No matter the real or imagined barriers, there are techniques to surmount them. Think about difficult situations youve confronted in your past. How did you overcome them? Looking back on strategies youve used successfully can pave the way to viable approaches you can take today. Learn from others who have risen to the top in the fieldWho are the stars and champions in the field to which you are heading? What can you learn about how they overcome barriers that can be instructive in your own life? Are any approachable, possibly mentors, to help you get to where you want to go? I am amazed at how creative people in these groups are about helping others overcome the barriers they face to getting what they want. Ive observed time and again that we each have much more courage for others. We can see ways around, under, over and through blockages they view as solidly concrete. So make yourself a promise dont give up your backburner dream. Over 50 And Changing Careers? You’d Better Have a Plan

By Kent Johnson Like it or not, if youre over 50 and changing careers, youre going to face some challenges that younger workers arent accustomed to. Theres an unspoken bias out there against older workers at least in many companies - and unless you plan ahead and are prepared to meet that bias head on, you could be in for a long and frustrating job search. For many employers, older workers mean trouble. The perception is that workers over 50 will have more health problems, will miss more work days, will be more forgetful and make more mistakes on the job, and will cost more to insure. Theres also the belief that an employer will have to pay an older worker more, and that theyll get less for their investment when the worker retires or moves on. And perhaps the worst bias that older job seekers have to face is the idea that theyre dinosaurs, or some kind of museum relic thats out of touch with the needs of modern business. And whats surprising is that many of the employers who feel this way are over 50 themselves! Now an employer isnt going to come out and tell you that youre too old for the job that kind of discrimination is illegal, after all. Youre more likely to hear something like Your overqualified for the position, or Were looking for an entry-level worker to fill this post. And this comes at a time when people are living longer, more productive lives than ever before. A man or woman in good health today can expect to live to be 76 years old. And with the elimination of pension plans in most corporations, and the fall back of the stock market in recent years, many employees will have to work well beyond the traditional retirement age of 65. So what are older job seekers supposed to do? Well first off, you need to acknowledge the challenge but dont let it discourage you. Many companies are hiring workers over 50, and some of them actually prefer mature employees because of their experience and dependability.
